The second Sunday of May annually marks the celebration of Mother’s Day in most parts of the world. The day dedicated to honouring and celebrating mothers and motherhood is on May 14th, 2023 this year. It provides a special opportunity to recognize and appreciate the women who have given us life, nurtured us, and played an integral role in shaping who we are today. Although observed on different dates around the world, many countries, such as the United States, Germany, Brazil, Finland, India, China, celebrate it on the second Sunday in May.

Mothers Day is a special day dedicated to honouring and celebrating mothers and motherhood.

Mothers are often the unsung heroes of our lives. They provide unconditional love, support, and guidance throughout our childhood and beyond. Mothers sacrifice so much for their children, from carrying them for nine months, to staying up late to take care of them when they are sick, to working hard to provide for their families.

History of Mother’s Day

The idea of celebrating Mother’s Day dates back to ancient times when the Greeks and Romans held festivals to honour mother goddesses such as Rhea and Cybele. In modern times, the celebration of Mother’s Day started in the United States in the early 20th century.

Anna Jarvis-The Woman Behind the Creation of Mother’s Day

Anna Jarvis was born in 1864 in West Virginia. She was the daughter of Ann Reeves Jarvis, a social activist who worked to improve public health and sanitation. During the Civil War, Ann Reeves Jarvis organized groups of women to care for wounded soldiers, regardless of which side they fought on. After the war, she organized a Mothers’ Friendship Day, where mothers of soldiers from both the North and South came together to promote reconciliation and peace.

Anna Jarvis started campaigning for a special day to honour mothers after the death of her mother in 1905, deeply inspired by her mother’s work. Her goal was to create a day where people could express their gratitude and love for their mothers, and to raise awareness about the importance of maternal health and child welfare. She organized the first Mother’s Day observance in 1908 in her hometown of Grafton, West Virginia, where a church service was held in honour of all mothers.

President Woodrow Wilson Declares Mother’s Day a National Holiday

Jarvis continued to work tirelessly to promote the holiday throughout the country, and in 1914, President Woodrow Wilson signed a proclamation designating the second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day, and the holiday quickly became popular throughout the United States. Many countries around the world celebrate Mother’s Day today as a way of recognizing and appreciating the sacrifices and contributions of mothers everywhere.

HOW THE WORLD CELEBRATES MOTHER’S DAY

This Special Day is a time to recognize and appreciate all that our mothers do for us. It is a time to say thank you and to show our gratitude for their love and devotion. We can express our love and appreciation for our mothers through gifts, cards, and flowers on this special day.

Mother’s Day is not just a time for giving gifts. It’s also an opportunity to spend quality time with them, to create memories and share experiences that will last a lifetime. Whether it’s going out for brunch, taking a walk in the park, or simply spending time at home together, the most important thing is to let our mothers know how much they mean to us.

The Date of MOTHER’S DAY

Many countries, including the US, Canada, Australia, and India, celebrate Mother’s Day on the second Sunday of the month. Other countries like Japan, Philippines, South Africa, and Brazil also celebrate on the second Sunday of the month.

Nonetheless, other countries celebrate it on different dates, and May is not always the month when it is celebrated.

In the UK and Ireland, Mothering Sunday is celebrated on the fourth Sunday of Lent to honour and appreciate mothers.

In various countries around the world, people celebrate Mother’s Day on different dates. Egypt celebrates it on March 21st, coinciding with the spring equinox. Argentina celebrates on the third Sunday of October.

Russians celebrate this special day  on the last Sunday of November.  Russians view this day as an important occasion to honour and appreciate mothers and mother figures. They celebrate it with various traditions and customs that are unique to their country.

Thailand recognizes Queen Sirikit as the mother of the nation and celebrates her birthday on August 12th as Mother’s Day. Thais honor and appreciate mothers and mother figures for their love, care, and sacrifices on this important occasion.

Indonesians celebrate Mother’s Day on December 22nd, which marks the anniversary of the first Indonesian Women’s Congress held in 1928. In these countries, people honour and appreciate mothers and mother figures for their contributions to the family and society.

People in these countries value the occasion to recognize and appreciate mothers and mother figures for their love and sacrifices. They celebrate it with various traditions and customs that are unique to each country.

International Mother’s Day

International Mother’s Day is always celebrated on the second Sunday in May. Therefore, the date for International Mother’s Day in 2023 will be Sunday, May 14th, 2023 this year.

As we celebrate this special loving day, it’s important to remember the many ways that mothers enrich our lives. They provide us with unconditional love, support, and guidance throughout our lives. She sacrifices for her children by carrying them, caring when sick, and working hard to provide for the family

Mother’s Day is a time to honour , celebrate and appreciate the incredible women who have given us so much. We show gratitude, love, and appreciation for all our mothers have done and continue to do.
