Anna Jarvis-The Woman Behind the Creation of Mother’s Day
Anna Jarvis was born in 1864 in West Virginia. She was the daughter of Ann Reeves Jarvis, a social activist who worked to improve public health and sanitation. During the Civil War, Ann Reeves Jarvis organized groups of women to care for wounded soldiers, regardless of which side they fought on. After the war, she organized a Mothers’ Friendship Day, where mothers of soldiers from both the North and South came together to promote reconciliation and peace.
Anna Jarvis started campaigning for a special day to honour mothers after the death of her mother in 1905, deeply inspired by her mother’s work. Her goal was to create a day where people could express their gratitude and love for their mothers, and to raise awareness about the importance of maternal health and child welfare. She organized the first Mother’s Day observance in 1908 in her hometown of Grafton, West Virginia, where a church service was held in honour of all mothers.
President Woodrow Wilson Declares Mother’s Day a National Holiday
Jarvis continued to work tirelessly to promote the holiday throughout the country, and in 1914, President Woodrow Wilson signed a proclamation designating the second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day, and the holiday quickly became popular throughout the United States. Many countries around the world celebrate Mother’s Day today as a way of recognizing and appreciating the sacrifices and contributions of mothers everywhere.
